Abstract

Depression is common in patients with cardiovascular disease and following stroke. It is associated with poorer outcomes, including higher mortality. Treatment of post-stroke and post-myocardial-infarction depression is associated with better outcomes, including lower mortality rates. Despite this, depression is often unrecognised and untreated. The aim of this paper is to assist the clinician in the assessment and treatment of depression in the context of stroke and cardiovascular disease.
