Abstract

Education has a dual role in autism: compensating for failures in intuitively understanding and benefiting from the social world, and providing access to culturally valued skills and knowledge. Professionals need an understanding of autism to identify special needs accurately and to provide appropriate education. Autism presents particular challenges to inclusion but can be managed in different settings. Autism-specific education needs to be specified carefully rather than just claimed.
